Car lifter shot at in broad daylight at Gopalganj in Silchar

SILCHAR: The Sunday morning rush in Gopalganj, a busy marketplace in the heart of the town, was stunned to witness a filmy chase by police followed by gunning down a youth and finally the wounded person was whisked away by the men in uniform to Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The bullet-hit youth was seen dialling his mobile phone and informing someone that police had shot him.
The dramatic incident happened on Sunday morning at Gopalganj in Silchar. Police source said, the wounded youth, Afzal Hussain Barbhuiyan alias Lal is a wanted car lifter. Police had an information that Lal was hiding in a residence in Janiganj, another busy market place near Gopalganj. Accordingly police nabbed him. But Lal allegedly attacked a policeman, Anwar Hussain with a dagger and tried to escape. The chase began then, and finally Lal was shot at.
Later, both Lala and the police staff were shifted to Silchar Medical College Hospital for treatment. SMCH sources said, Anwar Hussain is out of danger, but Lal's condition is said to be critical as the bullet had pierced through his belly.
Police source said that Lal was a habitual criminal. Few months back, police arrested him and recovered three stolen bikes from him. In another incident in the past, Lal had attacked a police personnel.
