Case Registered Against 9 Students of JB College for Ragging

JORHAT: A case has been filed in the Jorhat Police Station of Assam against nine students accused of ragging a first-year student by the administration of the Jagannath Barooah College of Jorhat.

Even before the student from Dibrugarh University could recover from his injuries related to a ragging-related incident, another incident has come to light from Jorhat. A first-year student named Pranab Jyoti Chetia of the popular Jagannath Barooah College of Jorhat had posted a video on a social media site accusing several of his seniors of harassment.

The student had mentioned that he hailed from a very poor family in the Lakhimpur District of Assam and that residing in the college hostel was essential for him. But the accused miscreants had made it impossible for him to reside there and he had to vacate his accommodation and shift to a PG. He also mentioned that after he put in his complaint regarding the incident, three students pressured him to take it back.

Following the strict orders from the chief minister of the state to take very strict action against any such incident, the college authorities took the necessary steps and registered a complaint regarding the incident at the local police station.

Commenting on the incident the principal told that the legal action has been initiated after a meeting of the internal committee of the institution and the suggestions from the Anti-Ragging Committee.

The names of the miscreants have been revealed as Jintu Chetri, Bikramaditya Bora, Bishal Rongpi, Akashjyoti Saikia, Syamanta Upadhya, Bastab Gohain, Sumit Rai, Dipankar Tamuli and Ankur Chaudhary.

Speaking about the recent cases of ragging in the state, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta called ragging to be very discriminatory to the victims. He said that students go to educational institutions to study and should refrain from such activities and added that his department will take action to punish the responsible people appropriately.
