Cases of Covid 19 in Gauhati University Leads to Closing of Hostels and Physical Classes

Gauhati University authorities cancels physical classes, cultural night and also directed to close the hostels for five days

GUWAHATI: Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam has cancelled the cultural night supposed to be held on December 14 as part of the talent search competitions organised by the Postgraduate Students' Union.

To prevent the disease from spreading further, the administration has designated three hostels as containment zones. Hostels and offline classes will be closed from December 15 to December 19, according to university officials.

According to the health department's orders, the Covid-19 test was conducted at the university last week. Covid infection has caused students to be brought to the hospital.

As a result of the Honorable Vice-Chancellor of GU's instruction, the cultural night that was scheduled for December 14, 2021 has been cancelled. On the cultural night, the 'Talent Search Competition' was planned to take place. The Post Graduate Students Union was in charge of organizing the event.

Furthermore, according to the notice, outsider admission will be prohibited during this time. The Registrar's standards state that the office should operate with the bare minimum of resources. To prevent the virus from spreading, all stakeholders should follow COVID-19 rules such as wearing masks, maintaining social distance, using hand sanitizer, and other measures.

NHM informed that no cases of Omicron had been identified in the state so far, but added that swab samples from all 18 people infected had been sent to Kolkata for genome sequencing.

According to an NHM bulletin, Assam registered 22 new cases on December 12, bringing the overall number of cases in the state to 6, 18,575 cases. Till date no Omicron has been detected in the state

In total, 41 cases of Omicron have been discovered in the country, the most of them are from Maharashtra. The state has 20 Omicron cases, with Rajasthan having nine, Gujarat having four, and Karnataka having three. One instance each has been reported in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Two cases of the novel variety have been reported in Delhi as well.
