An arrested cattle smuggler was shot by the Assam Police while trying to flee from custody.
The notorious cattle smuggler who has had built a reputation for many incidents of cattle smuggling, sustained injuries from the gun wound in Assam's Kokrajhar district.
The Assam Police has taken strict and rigid steps towards the elimination of illegal criminal activities in the state, busting the notorious cattle smuggling syndicate being one.
Sorangi Chinna, the accused, was nabbed at Gossaigaon. When interrogsted, the 39-year-old cattle mafia revealed many of his associates.
However, while being transported to Sukanjohra at 1 a.m. to locate the house of a co-accused, Chinna seized the service gun of the Kokrajhar police station's sub-inspector and fled into the woods.
Following a single gunshot injury, a squad of Kokrajhar police officials fired two rounds at Chinna in an attempt to prevent any risk.
The injured cattle thief has been admitted to Kokrajhar's RNB Civil Hospital. The situation is being further investigated.
Assam police have recently increased their attempts to bust livestock smuggling groups and associated mafias.
Mojjamil Hoque of Barpeta Road, a seasoned cattle smuggling ring mastermind, was also detained on June 21 (case no 298/21) and sentenced to police detention for 10 days on June 22.
Furthermore, on May 22, Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi announced in the state assembly that the Assam administration will introduce legislation to safeguard cows in the state during the next session of the Assam assembly.
Notably, the Border Security Forces captured 476,035 head of cattle along the Indo-Bangla border between 2016 and 2020, while a total of 24,060 cows were taken from the Assam-Bangladesh border between December 1, 2019, and November 30, 2020.
In the last month, there have been 5 cases of accused trying to escape police custody and in retaliation getting shot and injured by the Assam Police.
The 65-year-old man suspected of raping and murdering a nine-year-old child in Assam's Morigaon was shot at by police as he attempted to flee police custody. According to GP Singh, the Special DGP of the Assam Police, the accused was taken to recreate the crime scene where he tried to flee from police custody on the pretext of answering nature's call. To prevent his escape, the police fired two rounds due to which the rape accused suffered light injuries.
Also, Kanwaldeep Singh Sindhu, one of the key suspects in the kidnapping of a businessman called Atul Das, succumbed to death after being grievously injured in police retaliatory firing.
