GUWAHATI: In a major initiative to boost the EV environment and tackle pollution, the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has sanctioned a total of 89 EVCS (Electric Vehicle Charging Stations) for three northeastern states.

From the total 89 Electric Vehicle charging stations, 20 will be installed in Assam with ten each in the two major cities of Guwahati and Jorhat.

The particular initiative comes under the second phase of the FAME (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicle) scheme of the Indian government to reduce the use of Diesel and Petrol-powered vehicles in India.

The MHI has issued an official statement regarding its instalment of 89 EV charging stations in different cities of the 3 states in the northeast.

As mentioned in the official statement, the ministry has sanctioned 20 Electric Vehicle Charging Stations for Assam, 40 for Meghalaya and 29 for Sikkim.

In Meghalaya, the centre has installed all the 40 EVCS in the capital city of Shillong and a total of 29 EVCS in Sikkim has been installed in the state's capital city Gangtok.

The MHI has sanctioned a total of 2877 charging stations in 68 different cities located in 25 different Indian states and union territories under the 2nd Phase of the FAME India scheme as informed by Pal Gurjar, Minister of States for Heavy Industries in a written reply in the parliament.

In addition, the Ministry has sanctioned a total of 1576 EVCS across nine expressways and 16 highways under the same phase of the scheme.

It may be mentioned that in compliance with the Ministry of Power guidelines there will be one EV charging station at every 25 kilometres on both sides of the Highway.

Moreover, there will be one EVCS for long-range and heavy-duty electric vehicles at every 100 kilometres on both sides of the Highway.

This came after increasing population in the country mainly along the northeastern areas putting pressure on policymakers seeking solutions to tackle the pollution level and ageing transportation infrastructure.
