Palasbari:Tensions ran high at the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Kamrup district convention held in Chaygaon on Sunday, as internal divisions and dissatisfaction among party workers spilled out in the open, resulting in scuffles and disruptions during the meeting.

The convention, chaired by district president Khagen Nath, witnessed the presence of over a thousand delegates. AGP general secretary Subharam Das delivered the inaugural address, followed by speeches from senior leaders including former minister Dr Kamala Kanta Kalita, and former MLAs Satyabrata Kalita and Jyotiprasad Das.The chaos began during a fiery speech by AGP Rangiya constituency general secretary Pradip Kumar Bora, who accused party leadership Atul Bora and Keshab Mahanta of treating the AGP as personal property.

He also criticized their silence on Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma allegedly calling Dr Kalita a “duplicate leader.”Soon after, AGP leaders requested media personnel to leave the venue which is a move that angered both journalists and grassroots workers. Many media persons protested outside the venue under the banner of the Chaygaon Press Club, which later strongly condemned their expulsion. The situation escalated when party member Arnab Bharali praised the AGP ministers, provoking a furious reaction from the audience. Bharali was attacked on stage, had his microphone snatched, and was later confined to a room for his safety. Police had to intervene and escort him to Chaygaon Police Station amid chants branding him a “BJP agent.”Despite the chaos, the Kamrup district unit passed a resolution to contest five Assembly constituencies independently in the upcoming elections.

Speaking to the press, Satyabrata Kalita blamed the BJP for sidelining AGP workers, failing to implement the NRC, and pushing Assam towards turmoil through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He also accused BJP of disrespecting the alliance and marginalizing AGP’s role.Dr Kamala Kanta Kalita warned that unless the party’s central leadership takes grassroots concerns seriously, rebellion is inevitable. He said the Kamrup district unit may field its own candidates in all constituencies. While he did not confirm any switch in allegiance, he admitted to being approached by other parties and confirmed his intention to contest the 2026 Assembly elections.

He added that although AGP and BJP share ideological roots, on the ground, BJP seems to be operating more like the Congress, especially in South Kamrup. AGP workers echoed these sentiments, accusing the BJP of forcing them to “beg for even minor grants,” questioning the true nature of the alliance.

The incident has exposed deep cracks within the AGP, particularly over its alliance with the BJP, raising serious questions ahead of the 2026 elections.
