Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal visits storm-hit Lezai area, assures assistance

GUWAHATI: As the seasonal storm battered parts of Lezai area of Moran in Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Friday braving inclement weather visited the storm hit areas of Lezai and talked to the affected people.

Chief Minister Sonowal this morning visited Lezai and Lezai Baruah village where a section of people along with their properties were badly hit by the cyclonic storm. Sonowal moved from house to house, took stock of the extent of damage and talked to the affected people. He also assured that the government would stand by the affected people in times of adversities.

It may be noted that, immediately after the seasonal storm hit parts of State, causing widespread devastations, Chief Minister Sonowal issued direction to all deputy commissioners to take immediate steps to reach out to the affected people to mitigate their hardships. He also directed them to carry out a survey to assess the magnitude of damage induced by the storm.

Sonowal while talking to the storm hit people of Lezai areas informed them that Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Pallab Gopal Jha in association with other heads of the departments of Dibrugarh district is preparing a report to quantify the damage of properties so that the government machinery can intervene to rebuild the damaged houses immediately.

The Chief Minister also said that at a time when the entire State is in lockdown to contain the spread of novel coronavirus, the seasonal cyclonic storm had induced untold sufferings to the people. He, therefore, reiterated that his government is committed to provide relief and respite to the people to give them solace especially when the State is going through an unprecedented health emergency. Empathizing with the people, Sonowal emphasized that the government would get on to the restoration work immediately and help them to lead a life of dignity.

Chief Minister Sonowal also observed that since the State is approaching towards monsoon season and the possibility of seasonal flood looms large, the workers associated with repairing embankment should maintain adequate social distancing. He also called upon the contractors, engineers, workers to adhere to the protocols and advisories given by the health and family welfare department in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

MLA Moran Chakradhar Gogoi, MLA Dibrugarh Prasanta Phukan, MLA Lahowal Rituporna Baruah, DC Dibrugarh Pallab Gopal Jha, SP, Dibrugarh Sreejith and senior officers of other line departments were presenting during CM’s visit to the area, stated a press release.
