GAURISAGAR: Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) has geared up to initiate the 100 MW Amguri solar power project on the outskirts of Amguri Japisajia village in Sivasagar district. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will lay the foundation stone of the 100 MW solar power project on February 27 instead of the former 360 MW gas-based thermo electricity project.

During the first term of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta on November 21, 1990 laid the foundation stone of the 360 MW gas-based thermo electricity project at Amguri Japisajia Lalimchapori village covering 1,100 bighas of land proposed at the cost of Rs 1408.25 crore. But later the State Government had to reduce the capacity of the project from 360 MW to 100 MW when the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas expressed its inability to supply the necessary gas during the ninth plan period. Due to change of political scenario, the fate of the Amguri power project hung in the balance and people forgot about it gradually.

But Amguri MLA Prodip Hazarika was persistent and due to his untiring efforts, finally the Amguri Power project will be commissioned soon. The MLA told media persons that in the first phase, 70 MW electric power would be generated and in the second phase, remaining 30 MW power would be generated.

In this connection, Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited organized a public meeting of the foundation stone-laying ceremony. In the meeting, besides Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, State Power and PWD minister Tapan Kumar Gogoi, MP Kamakshya Prasad Tassa and Amguri MLA Prodip Hazarika will grace the function.
