Chirang adds grandeur to 73rd Independence Day celebration at the district headquarter

Kokrajhar: Together with the rest of the country, the 73rd Independence Day was celebrated at the district headquarter of Chirang district with great fanfare and grandeur.

On the occasion, Chirang Deputy Commissioner Gautam Talukdar unfurled the National Flag as Chief Guest at district parade ground and took the salute from 19 strong marching contingents comprising of Assam Police, Home Guards, Scouts and Guides and school students. Addressing a gathering of more than five thousand people, the Deputy Commissioner recalled the sacrifices and contributions made by the freedom fighters including Mahatma Gandhi and highlighted the overall achievement made by the various departments in the district.

He also gave away appreciation certificates and trophies to meritorious students, outstanding sports personalities, progressive farmers, good performing teachers, literary award winners and meritorious service medal holders at state level for their dedication, sincerity and exemplary deeds. The winners of the march-past, cultural programme, essay writing competition, quiz, speech, singing and art competitions were also awarded with certificates and attractive prizes. As such, the display of Arms by the 5th Garwal Regiment stationed at Kajalgaon, street drama on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan of Public Health Engineering department and band display by Don Bosco School, Bengtal enthralled the audience with their skills.

In the afternoon, an exhibition football match between Deputy Commissioner-XI and the Chirang District Sports Association were held. Among others, Superintendent of Police Sudhakar Singh, Rwngwra Narzary, Ex- MLA Matindra Basumatary, senior district officials, all heads of the departments and heads of educational institutions witnessed the programme.
