KOKRAJHAR: With a view to increasing the COVID vaccine coverage, an emergent meeting with the representatives of nine districts of catholic church was held for spreading awareness about the vaccination drive among the masses at Sammonyay Pastoral centre of Kharija, Dalagaon on Saturday.

The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Narendra Kumar Shah, Deputy Commissioner, Chirang, in the presence of Chirang Superintendent of Police Pranjit Barah, Additional Deputy Commissioner Khanindra Das and Thomas Pulloppillil, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bongaigaon.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner Narendra Kumar Shah requested the church representatives to dispel myths, rumours and misinformation regarding the vaccination drive and to mobilize public, especially at rural areas for COVID vaccination. He appealed all to get inoculated in order to keep others safe amid the pandemic.

"It is our responsibility to save ourselves and others by taking vaccine shots, as this is the only way to protect ourselves from the deadly virus," he said. Informing about the restrictions imposed by the district administration under the available sections of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, he also asked the religious leaders to ensure entry of only 60 vaccinated persons per hour at any iconic places and 40 fully vaccinated persons per hour for other religious places to offer prayer.

Thomas Pulloppillil, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bongaigaon also called upon their church leaders to play a key role in the society in the battle against vaccine hesitancy and misinformation on it.
