Chirang Deputy Commissioner emphasizes use of new technology in road construction

KOKRAJHAR/BONGAIGAON: As part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Indian Independence, the Executive Engineer, Chirang (Roads and Building) Division, Public Works Department (PWD) organized a seminar on 'Role of PMGSY in the Development of Rural Roads and Socio-economic development of Rural Areas' in the conference hall of District Centre, Kajalgaon on Wednesday.

At the event inaugurated by Abani Sharma, Executive Engineer, PWD, Chirang (Roads and Building) Division was attended by Narendra Kumar Shah, Deputy Commissioner of Chirang, as chief guest, Deputy Speaker of Bodoland Territorial Council Legislative Assembly, Abhiram Mahanayak, and other dignitaries as invited guests.

In his introductory speech, highlighting the details about the purpose of celebrating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav in the country, Abani Sarma informed about the status of PMGSY works in Chirang district. He apprised that since the starting of PMGSY in the district, with the implementation of PMGSY, the department had been able to connect 230 villages by providing road connectivity in rural areas but 69 villages in the district were yet to be connected through this scheme. He also informed that in the first phase, the district had got sanctioned 531.319 km road length and of this, 530.402 km with 45 bridges were completed. In the second phase for only upgradation work, 25.065 km road length was sanctioned and out of this, 24.87 km was done and rest were in progress. As such, he said works of 32.13 km were underway in the phase II under PMGSY in Chirang district.

In the programme, Chandan Sharma, Additional Chief Engineer (PMGSY), PWD, Assam, spoke about the role of PMGSY in the development of rural areas, various aspects for successful implementation of the scheme, use of new technology for rural road construction with execution process and its advantages, including road selection, monitoring and maintenance processes.

Attending the meeting, the chairman of Kajalgaon Municipal Board, Rwngwra Narjary called upon the officials of Public Works Department and contractors present to do construction works while maintaining good quality as per the guidelines of the schemes and to strengthen the maintenance activities for the benefit of people.

Emphasizing use of new technology in every construction work of the PWD, Narendra Kumar Shah, Deputy Commissioner of Chirang, said that the PMGSY had brought a radical change in the rural road connectivity of the district. He lauded the works of engineers and officials of PWD along with the contractors for the success achieved under this scheme in the district. A power-point presentation on various aspects of PMGSY was also presented on the occasion.
