LAKHIMPUR: The Lakhimpur district body of Chutia Students’ Union will organize a mega mass convention on October 29 in Lakhimpur in association with the district bodies of Chutia Jati Sanmilan, Chutia Jati Mahila Sanmilan, and Chutia Yuva Sanmilan.

The event will be held at Tyag Kshetra of North Lakhimpur town with a day-long programme. This was declared by Lakhimpur district president of Chutia Jati Sanmilan, Brojen Saikia at a press meet held at North Lakhimpur Press Club on Saturday in the presence of the dignitaries of the brother organizations.

“The people of the Chutia community, which is one of the ancient and noted communities of Assam with historical importance since the age of the Mahabharata, have become downtrodden due to the negligence on the part of the Union and State governments. The community has to continue its struggle seeking justice year after year. Yet the governments have shown no goodwill to uplift the community at a time when many communities of Assam have enjoyed the governmental benefits in addition to that of the reservation system,” stated Brojen Saikia.

He said that the issues of betrayal and negligence by the governments towards the community, the agenda of their struggle, the alleged nasty politics of the governments with regard to the title of Bogibeel Bridge and many other topics would be discussed in the convention for the sake of restoring the lost prestige of the community. Further, he and the leaders of the brother organizations strongly reiterated their demand to christen the bridge after the name of Sati Sadhani before its inauguration on December 25. “Sati Sadhani was not only the icon of the Chutia community but the first and foremost valiant heroine of Asia. We will not tolerate the politics of the government to christen the bridge after any other politician,” Saikia added in the press meet.
