Kokrajhar: Activists of Bodoland Students’ Union (BSU) and Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM) and conscious citizens of Kokrajhar town came out on the streets on Monday to register their protest against the series of thefts and sexual assault attempts by spraying chemicals to make the victims unconscious, across the district. They demanded the district administration to take stringent measures to deal with the incidents.
Three persons - Mukesh Ray, Nehru Baruah and Harem Baruah of Patgaon in the district- were arrested by police for alleged attempt to rape female students by using chemical spray. The two minor girls were hospitalized after the suspected trio sprayed some chemicals leaving them unconscious at Sonapur and Dharampur villagers in Kokrajhar district on Saturday night.
According to police, the girls, belonging to ethnic indigenous tribal community, were studying in their rooms when the miscreants sprayed chemicals from outside, making them drowsy. The girls managed to shout for help before becoming senseless.
The first incident happened at Sonapur village and the second at Dharamtol village. The villagers raised an alarm and tried to catch the miscreants but they managed to escape under the cover of darkness leaving behind a TVS Scooty Streak (Black) with registration number AS-16B/6601.
The victim girls are undergoing treatment at Rupnath Brahma Civil Hospital, Kokrajhar. They are stated to be out of danger but suffering from drowsiness. Police picked up Mukesh Ray, Nehru Baruah and Haren Baruah from Patgaon in this connection. Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Partha Pratim Mazumdar along with Kokrajhar Additional SP Rosy Rani Sarmah visited the spot and also the hospital to take stock of the incident and talked to the Medical Officer on duty. Cases are being registered and further investigation is on.
