Citizens’ Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC) Assam condemns ‘harassment’ of Bengalis in the name of NRC

Silchar: Citizens’ Rights Preservation Committee (CRPC) Assam strongly condemned the outburst of various students and other organizations in the adjoining states of Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur carried out in the name of protecting state borders, just after the publication of draft NRC on July 30. Hafiz Rashid Ahmed Choudhury, chief advisor, CRPC Assam expressed his anguish in the manner in which the Khasi Students’ Union started carrying out security checks at Ratacherra in East Jaintia Hills and other border areas of Assam – Meghalaya asking people to produce NRC documents who are plying from Assam to various parts through Meghalaya.

Sadhan Purkayastha, secretary general, CRPC Assam, stated that the students’ wing of Manipur also started checking the entry of outsiders in to Manipur following the publication of the draft NRC in Assam. People of Jiribam district of Manipur which lies in the border area of Barak Valley, are being harassed to produce their NRC documents.

He also added that even Nagaland have raised the hue and cry over this issue. Bidhayak Das Purkayastha, general secretary, CRPC Assam, expressed that The All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) served a 15 day ultimatum to illegal migrants to go back to where they had come from, in view of possible infiltration of non tribal in the state owing to the recent update of the NRC in Assam.

The leaders of CRPC Assam are deeply concerned about the consequences of NRC whose roots are spreading throughout the Northeast, raising alarm, fear, disharmony, conflict among the people who are genuine Indians belonging to various linguistic and religious groups living in the different northeastern states. In the name of protecting their respective states, no student or any other organizations have any right to check NRC or other documents of a person, which can only be done by concerned government authorities. The leaders of CRPC Assam demand that the Assam and Central governments should immediately intervene into the matter seriously and take adequate measures to curb such atrocities and humiliations before the spark takes a volatile shape.
