Dibrugarh: “Some forces are trying to make a dent into the unity of the greater Assamese community to suit their interests regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016,” observed the chief advisor of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Dr. Samujjal Bhattacharya, at an event held on Tuesday in memory of freedom fighter Xunti Sharma Bhattacharya.
Organized by the Dibrugarh District Journalist Association in association with Greater Dibrugarh Press Club, the event took place at DHSK College. In his speech, Bhattacharya traced the demographic history of Assam since the British rule in India, and the role played by AASU in the scheme of things. Mincing no word about the problem of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the State, the veteran student leader said that Assam and her people had long been a victim of the issue, and as such, rolling out a successful NRC would be a watershed in the State’s history.
Affirming firm faith in the Supreme Court, he said that he was certain that the apex court would leave no stone unturned to ensure the publication of an NRC that would be free of all illegal immigrants. Bhattacharya also spoke against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, and at the same time warned the gathering not to drop their guard against the determined efforts to jeopardize the Assamese community by pushing for the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. The event was graced a host of dignitaries, including Runuma Sharma; senior journalist Ikbal Ahmed and Principal of DHSK College, Sashi Saikia.
