MANGALDAI: Mangaldai Municipality Board (MMB) has finally bowed down before the largescale public resentment against the exorbitant proposed hike in taxes and announced the cancellation of the draft notification of tax hike issued earlier on February 20. The announcement has been made in public by MMB chairperson Nirmali Devi Sarma in presence of the Executive Officer and the elected ward commissioners of the civic body while receiving the memorandum from the newly-formed local citizens’ forum called “Mangaldai Nagar Nagarik Jagaran Mancha “(MNNJM).

In their memorandum, the forum demanded cancellation of the MMB’s notification of February 20 which proposed new enhanced rates of taxes to be made effective from the month of April next. They also fixed March 20 as the deadline for filing individual claims and objections.

Earlier on the day, a large number of tax paying citizens assembled at Mangaldai Sanatan Dharmasabha under the banner of MNNJM and after a brief speech by its office bearers peacefully marched forward to the office of MMB to hand over their memorandum. The participants of procession shouted slogans against the tax hike and also in support of their demands. However, security forces led by Executive Magistrate and Officer in Charge of Mangaldai Police Station blocked them in the middle. Later, MMB chairperson along with the Executive Officer and Ward Commissioners arrived there and received the memorandum. On the otherhand, Darrang district unit of AJYCP in collaboration with its Mangaldai town unit demonstrated a protest against the tax hike in front of the district library here on Monday.
