DIBRUGARH: Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has called for the urgent necessity for sustainable solutions to tackle the financial difficulties faced by Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL), which has recorded losses over the past two years.

During his visit to BCPL in Lepetkata, Dibrugarh, on Saturday, the Chief Minister disclosed that the petrochemical company is suffering an annual loss of Rs 500 crore. Following a tour of the plant and a briefing by BCPL CMD Pranjal Changmai, Sarma acknowledged that while government support may persist in the short term, a robust long-term strategy is crucial.

“BCPL has encountered significant financial hurdles, with annual losses nearing Rs 500 crore in the last two years. Although we remain committed to supporting this vital project, we must create sustainable solutions that ensure its long-term viability rather than depending solely on government aid,” Sarma stated.

BCPL, often referred to as the Assam Gas Cracker Project, stands as a major industrial initiative in Northeast India. It is a joint venture in which GAIL (India) Limited holds a dominant 70% share, while the Government of Assam, Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), and Oil India Limited (OIL) collectively own the remaining 30% equity.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 5, 2016, the project was launched as part of the historic Assam Accord and has recently completed nine years of operation. Despite its strategic relevance to the region, financial sustainability remains a pressing issue.

BCPL focuses on producing a variety of petrochemical products, including Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE), Polypropylene (PP), and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE), using natural gas and naphtha as feedstock.
