

Rs 5 crore allotted for Swahid Trust: CM

MORIGAON: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated the newly-constructed science building of Morigaon College and dedicated it in the name of retired Principal of the college and renowned academician, Narendra Nath Keot.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister urged the students to be responsive and sensitive towards the society. He said that during different phases of our life, we come under the influence and guidance of our parents, teachers and society. However, the day our academic life ends and we step into the real world, our aim should be to help the poor and the needy.
The Chief Minister said that accountability towards society and sensitivity towards fellow human beings are finer qualities of good students. He urged the students to cultivate these qualities among themselves and advised them to focus on innovativeness and entrepreneurship. He also stressed the need to acquire different skills by students to excel in their professional life.
During the programme, the Chief Minister announced a grant of Rs. 1 crore to set up a science laboratory and development of infrastructure of the college. He also informed that the State Government was contemplating to provide pocket money and free text books to poor and middle-class students to help them in their academic life.
Water Resources Minister Pijush Hazarika, MLA Ramakanta Deuri, CEM of Tiwa Autonomous Council, Jibon Konwar, retired Principal of the college and renowned academician Narendra Nath Keot and several other dignitaries were present in the programme.
Later, Chief Minister Sarma also inaugurated a cultural museum built in the memory of founder of Ek Saran Bhagabati Samaj, Acharya Ilaram Das at Morigaon on Friday.
The Chief Minister also attended the Swahid Divas organized centrally by the Bharatiya Janata Yuba Morcha (BJYM), Assam Pradesh, at HS & MP school field in Morigaon. Addressing more than 5,000 people Chief Minister Sarma said, "We will not let the sacrifice of the 855 martyrs go in vain." He said that the government was taking steps to protect the Assamese community.
Regarding redressal of grievances of the families of martyrs, the Chief Minister said, "We have formed a Swahid Trust for martyrs. Rs. 5 crore has been allotted for the Trust. The families of martyrs will be benefitted by the Trust. We will try to increase the amount of the Trust from Rs 5 crore up to Rs 50 crore."
