SILCHAR: Terming the Silchar deluge a man-made one, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Strict action would be taken against those miscreants who had damaged Bethukandi dyke which inundated almost whole of the town." Sarma, who made an aerial survey of the submerged area on Thursday, held a meeting at the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner to chalk out a plan for combating the unprecedented flood situation in Silchar.

Later speaking to the mediapersons, Sarma said, if people damage the dyke themselves then how could such calamity be prevented. He however said, on Friday more platoons of Army and Air Force would be deployed. Experts officials would be flown to Silchar to tackle the situation. Further one lakh drinking water and other essentials would be systematically distributed among the people who could not step out from the homes or relief camps.

The town is going through a traumatic phase as there is no electricity and internet service. Sarma assured that steps would immediately be taken to recharge the damaged transformers. A team of APDCL expert technicians would be sent to Silchar to fix the problems. A team of ten officials would also reach Silchar to monitor the relief distribution.

Meanwhile, roads leading to Silchar Medical College and Hospital were closed as the water was flowing with the current. Sarma advised the district authority to arrange proper treatment of the patients at Civil Hospital till the roads are conducive for vehicular movement. District administration in a press release on Sunday evening warned the people of Silchar that since miscreants had damaged a dyke at Bethukandi area, overflowing water of Barak river would inundate the low lying areas of the town. But administration did not clearly mention when the dyke was damaged and what steps the concerned department had taken to repair the damaged portion of the dyke. Today in response to the queries from journalists, the Chief Minister said, tough action would be taken against those miscreants.

Meanwhile, on the fifth day of the deluge situation further worsened in Silchar as fresh areas were inundated following a night-long shower. However, water had reportedly receded in some parts of the town. Air dropping of packaged drinking water by Air Force was done throughout the day. More army will be deployed, CM assured.
