GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, "In the changing face of crimes in the 21st century, the Assam Police personnel need to be empowered to combat with the crimes." Therefore, the present State government has taken series of steps for empowering the police forces". In tune with the steps, Sonowal on Wednesday inaugurated the construction work of Assam Police Academy at Dergaon.

Participating at the bhumi pujan for the Police Academy at Dergaon today, Chief Minister Sonowal said that a Police Academy has been a long felt need of the police forces in Assam and once completed the academy would help a great deal in transforming Assam Police into Smart Police. He said close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for smart policing, Sonowal said that State government's decision to empower the police forces and make them competent technologically is a way forward to make Assam Police Smart. Sonowal on this occasion also stated about Anundoram Borooah ACS Training Institute being constructed at Umrangshu and said that for giving state of the art training to all the government officers, State government took steps for the training institutes in the State.

Sonowal also said that Narendra Modi led BJP government immediately after coming to power took several welfare schemes for all sections of the people of the country. He said that the Jandhan scheme taken by the government enabled the people particularly from the unorganised sectors to come within the ambit of banking services without letting the middle men siphon off the benefits meant for the original beneficiaries. Stating on the nose dip corruption during the erstwhile Congress regime which deprived competent claimants of their rights, Sonowal said that the present BJP led State government immediately after coming to power in 2016 acted against corruption with the help of the police forces and eliminated corruption from all levels.

Additional Director General of Police (Security) Harmeet Singh gave the welcome address in the programme which was also addressed among others by Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and a host of others were present on the occasion. Chief Minister Sonowal also inaugurated the newly built police station of Dergaon under MOITRI scheme on the occasion. Later on the day, Chief Minister Sonowal unveiled a statue of Swargadeo Chaolung Siu Ka Pha at Khumtai.
