Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today offered his solemn tributes to the to martyred soldiers of Assam who laid down their lives fighting the Mughals at the Battle of Alaboi in 1669 at Pasara in Dadara of Kamrup.

The Chief Minister, who was accompanied by his cabinet members Himanta Biswa Sarma and Keshab Mahanta, paid floral tributes to the Assam martyrs at monuments built in their memory.

"The Battle of Alaboi represents unity, sacrifice & determination of the Assamese people in protecting our motherland. We should take inspiration from the valour of the brave martyrs to counter divisive forces in our society", Sonowal said.

The Assam Chief Minister also announced that a War Memorial will be constructed to honour the sacrifice made by the soldiers of Assam during the Battle of Alaboi.

Not much is known about the battle fought between the invader Mughals and the Ahom army on August 14, 1669, at Alaboi near Dadara of Kamrup district. It is generally believed that nearly 10,000 (maybe more) Assamese soldiers laid down their lives for the sovereignty of Assam at the Battle of Alaboi in 1669.

This emboldened the Ahom King for retaliation after two years under the generalship of Lachit Borphukan that reached its climax in the battles of Saraighat where the Mughal soldiers under the commandership of Ram Singha met their 'Waterloo' at the hands of Assamese soldiers. At the end of these two battles, the expansionist policy of the Mughals to annex Assam was nipped in the bud.
