Commemorative Day of Natyacharyya Brajanath Sarmah observed in Doomdooma

The 63rd Commemorative Day of Sainik-Silpi Brajanath Sarmah was observed at Doomdooma Natyamandir

DOOMDOOMA: The 63rd Commemorative Day of Sainik-Silpi Brajanath Sarmah was observed at Doomdooma Natyamandir on Monday. Incidentally, Brajanath Sarmah ventured to stage first ever co-acting in Assam at this stage way back in 1933 through his mobile theatrical group 'Kahinoor Opera'.

The programme began with garlanding of his portrait by president of the Natyamandir committee Arjun Baruah followed by lighting of lamp by Shyam Sundar Khound, vice president, Axam Natya Sanmilan. Prakash Dutta, former secretary, Tinsukia Zila Xahitya Xabha, initiated the tribute paying programme where several speakers reminisced about the contributions of dramatist, actor, freedom fighter late Brajanath Sarmah. On this occasion, five past veteran actors who acted on the stage of this traditional theatre hall were felicitated. They are Jadav Barman, Bhumidhar Barman, Prabhat Deka, Ramani Haloi and Amulya Khataniar.

In his speech journalist, actor Amulya Khataniar said that although the State government had started one commemorative award in honour of Natyacharyya Brajanath Sarmah and set up his bust at Sarbhog, yet he was not given the kind of recognition by the Government that he should have got as a freedom fighter. On the other hand, former Vice-Chairman, Doomdooma Town Committee (now Municipal Board) Prabhat Deka reminisced about the dramas that were successfully staged in the past.

In the programme anchored by Assistant Secretary Deben Deka and Cultural Secretary due Manoj Baruah and Kuladhar Barman, Tripti Das presented one Borgeet, Anamika Lahkar and Bhaskar Saikia rendered songs and Jaisurya Bora recited one of his self-composed poems.

Coincidentally, Sahitya Academy award winning litterateur from Arunachal Pradesh Yache Dorje Thongshi also attended the programme and paid his tribute to Natyacharyya with a brief speech. He was offered a warm felicitation on behalf of Natya Mandir committee and general public present there.
