LAKHIMPUR: Agriculture related spring festival of the Assamese community, Rongali Bihu or Bohag Bihu is not just a festival which involves husori, mukoli Bihu, Jeng Bihu, toka Bihu and related Bihu naam and dance forms, but also involves a number of traditional games which celebrate the joy of life, unity and fraternity in the society. These games are on the verge of extinction due to negligence on the part of the people. Fortunately, these games have been brought into the limelight once again by the people of Hiloidari village under Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district.

The people of the mentioned village organized various competitive events of the traditional games which are associated with Bihu. The programme was organized at Hulbowa Pothar of the village. It kick-started with the unfurling of Bihu flag by senior Bihuwa Bonshidhor Gogoi. The games were formally inaugurated by Monalisha Gogoi, the physical instructor of Indian Army. Then the competition events of long jump, high jump, tug of war, koni juj (egg fighting), kukura juj (cock fighting), climbing on the stem of banana plant, tekeli bhonga, kabaddi, musical chair, duck-catching and many other traditional games were held. The competitions were held among men and women, youths and teenagers, boys and girls separately.

The prize distribution ceremony of the programme was attended by Dhakuakhana Press Guild secretary Rajib Baruah, social activist-cum-Education Department employee Nabin Gogoi along with a host of prominent persons of the area.
