JORHAT: Two different cases were registered on Tuesday against a marriage ceremony held in Jorhat district after a person who had attended the wedding tested COVID-19 positive. The district administration has quarantined another 221 wedding guests and declared the area as a containment zone to prevent further spread of the deadly virus.

A marriage ceremony was held at Tarajan 1 No. Sonari Gaon in Jorhat town on Thursday which about 800 people had attended. Of the attendees, a 29-year old person, identified as Lakshyajit Bordoloi, tested COVID-19 positive. Later, his parents also tested COVID-19 positive. His father Sarat Chandra Bordoloi is an employee of the Public Works Department (PWD) irrigation office and as such, almost all the employees of the office who came in contact with Bordoloi were quarantined.

"Rimashree is the mother of the bride who obtained permission from the administration to hold the ceremony with maximum 50 persons in attendance. But about 800 persons were invited and these people attended the function by violating COVID-19 protocol. We have registered a case under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life), 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 51 b (Refuse to comply with any direction given by or on behalf of the government) of the Disaster Management Act," said a police officer in Jorhat police station.
