Pathsala: At a time when the Assam Government is giving importance to the education department, a section of people has expressed concern over the proposal to set up Bhattadev University campus in 140 bighas of land in Medhikuchi village, the worst flood-affected area near Pahumara River in the Bajali district where 35 houses, more than one hundreds of animals and roads were washed away during the devastating floods.

Jiten Talukdar, secretary of Pathsala Bazar Committee, said; "Every year, Medhikuchi village gets submerged due to the flood water of Pahumara River. This year also many houses and animals were washed away in floods."

"Authorities are planning to build a Bhattadev University campus in 140 bighas of land in this place. As the area is a flood-prone area, how can an institution function in this flood-affected area near the Pahumara River? The authorities concerned should look into the matter."

Apurba Dev Choudhury, secretary of Pathsala Nagar Unnayon Samiti said, "We all know the government is facing economic crisis and the area is not suitable for students as many roads and houses get destroyed during devastating floods."

"I appeal to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Education Minister Dr Ranoj Pegu to look into the matter. Otherwise, the area will be risky for students," he added.

Simanta Talukdar, a local youth of Medhikuchi village said, "During flood time, it is difficult to stay in our house. Earlier, many roads and houses were washed away. It takes years of hard work to build roads again. Before starting any project in this place the authorities concerned should think twice."
