MANGALDAI: In Kawadanga Raja Howli Gaon panchayat, under Dalgaon LAC in Darrang district, the process for the election of the President turned violent as Congress activists physically attacked the President, Khurshid Alam, immediately after his election.
Tensions flared after AIUDF-supported candidate Khurshid Alam was elected Chairman, securing six votes against the four received by the Congress-backed candidate. Following the results, a group of Congress supporters allegedly attacked Alam, physically assaulting him with kicks and punches, leaving him severely injured.
The police intervened, rescuing Alam and ensuring that he was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Visibly shaken, Alam tearfully stated that he was elected through a fair and democratic process, first as a ward member and then as the President via voting among ward members. He questioned the rationale behind the attack, accusing certain Congress supporters of resorting to violence due to their electoral defeat. Alam urged the District Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police to take stringent action against those responsible.
The incident reflected a broader issue of post-election violence in local governance, where democratic outcomes are challenged through intimidation.
