LAKHIMPUR: Thousands of Congress activists on Friday rocked Dhakuakhana in Lakhimpur district staging massive protest demanding the scrapping of the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019.

The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee initiated its Astitwa Rakshyar Jan-jagaran Jatra in Dhakuakhana, the native constituency of the State P&RD Minister Naba Kumar Doley, under the auspices of Dhakuakhana Congress unit, vehemently opposing the contentious Act. Taking part in the stir, thousands of protesters rocked the environment of Dhakuakhana town by shouting multiple slogans against the Act and flaying the BJP-led Union and State governments, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Finance Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma and various BJP MPs and MLAs and other leaders.

Harish Rawat, the in-charge of Assam State Congress cum former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand was present in the protest meeting organized on the occasion. He severly criticised the Prime Minister regarding the adaptation of the Act ‘adamently’ ignoring the extensive protest across the nation against the same.

“The CAA is enforced in order to collapse the communal harmony and peace and unity of India where multiple tribes and community, castes and sub-castes live. The Narendra Modi led Union Government has paid no heed to the protest programmes across the nation against it. This attitude of the Government has made it clear that the Act will be enforced in the nation to fulfil their vested interest,” stated Harish Rawat in his speech. He criticized CM Sarbananda Sonowal and his government with regard to killing of five persons during the anti-CAA agitation.

On the other hand, APCC president Ripun Borah, attending the protest programme, termed the BJP led governments at the Centre and in the State as the governments of liars. He declared that the Congress would not leave the streets until and unless the CAA was scrapped. AICC secretary Bhupen Borah, former cabinet minister Bharat Narah, Congress leader Kamal Kumar Medhi became vocal against the contentious Act and BJP governments in the protest meeting.
