Guwahati: Congress MLA from South Karimganj constituency, Siddique Ahmed, who was suspended from the primary membership of the party for "violating the three-line-whip of the party" in the Rajya Sabha election, has claimed that which was conducted on Thursday.

''I have been elected as an MLA multiple times and have participated in such votes on several occasions. Are you trying to tell me that I don't know how to vote?'' he told media persons.

"There has been a new trend in the party such as a culture of corruption and money collection for party works. Till such leaders will be in Congress, it can never return to power," Ahmed added.

He further accused he is being made a scapegoat for a coup against Congress candidate Ripun Bora.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) President Bhupen Kumar Borah on Thursday said that action has been taken against Ahmed following a report from the party's authorized election agent that Ahmed had written 'one' (alphabetically instead of the numerical digit '1' in the ballot paper, resulting in the vote being invalid.

"As the official agent of the INC in the just concluded Rajya Sabha polls in Assam, I would like to bring to your notice that Shri Siddique Ahmed (MLA of 4 No Karminganj-South LAC) instead of writing a numerical 1 wrote it alphabetically resulting in the vote being invalid amounting to indiscipline and violating the Three Line Whip of the party,'' Congress' authorized election agent, wrote in the report submitted to the Assam PCC chief.

The Assam APCC chief further said that despite conducting two mock polls, Chief Whip's instruction, and discussions with the CLP leader, deputy CLP leader, the MLA had intentionally voted against the party candidate.
