GUWAHATI:

The Congress has protested in front of Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati against the rise in the price of essential commodities as well as the fuel price hike.

The police attempted to prevent the dissidents from holding a demonstration, but the protestors moved out of Guwahati's Rajiv Bhawan by breaching the police barrier.

Police detained APCC President Ripun Bora, MP Pradyut Bordoloi, Gaurav Gogoi, and other party officials. During the demonstration, police also detained Opposition Leader Debabrata Saikia, Bharat Narah, Rakibul Hussain, Abdul Rashid Mandal, Zakir Hussain Sikdar, Asif Mohammad Nazar, and Abdur Rahim Ahmed.

Protesters also handed flowers and sweets to bike riders in appreciation of the BJP's extraordinary accomplishment in raising fuel prices, which even hit the century mark in many areas in the state.

According to a resolution made by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) on June 28th, Congress President Sonia Gandhi directed state units to stage a series of protests against the spiralling price hikes of petrol, diesel, and essential commodities between July 7 and 17, 2021.

Previously, district Congress committees organised cycle rallies in cities and towns, with elected municipal corporation officials and Congress workers attending. Protesters carried banners with anti-price-hike messages.

In the middle of the coronavirus outbreak, which has caused chaos in people's lives on all fronts, the Assam Pradesh Assam Pradesh Congress Party said that the enormous price rise on essential items has badly impacted the people of Assam, causing sufferings and turning their lives upside down.

The opposition parties even walked out of the assembly hall on the first day of the Assam Assembly's Budget Session after Speaker Biswajit Daimary refused to allow debate on the topic of rising fuel and other basic commodities costs.

The increase in fuel prices has been one of the focus areas for opposition parties' protests against the state government. As of today, the price of petrol in Assam's capital city is Rs. 97.69 a litre, while diesel is Rs. 89.26.
