Congress member arrested for arson during anti-CAA stir in Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: Sensation prevailed in Tinsukia after a Congress member and owner of a local TV channel was picked up and subsequently arrested for his alleged involvement in arson and damage to government property during the anti-CAA demonstration.

According to police, Babul Purkayastha (54) was spotted in video footage of pelting stones at the DC’s office Tinsukia during a public demonstration on the evening of December 11, the date on which the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was passed by the Parliament. The protesters became violent following which police resorted to action. Purkayastha was picked up from his residence on Sunday night.

According to media persons who were present at the spot for coverage, Purkayastha was video shooting the incident for his channel and was falsely implicated and made a scapegoat. A senior Congress leader viewed that Purkayastha’s arrest was a malafide intention of the government to establish that the Congress was behind the present unrest in the State. He is on judicial remand till next hearing said, family members.
