JORHAT: Jorhat district Congress committee, led by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) working president Rana Goswami, on Wednesday staged a sit-in in front of the Dr JK Saikia Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Jorhat to protest against the government's decision to close the institute along with Assam Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, Nagaon. The protesters shouted slogans against the government for allegedly deciding to "close the two colleges".

Demanding that the government should not go ahead with the decision to close the institutes by amalgamating with one in Guwahati, the protesters, including several women, shouting slogans against Jorhat Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs Topon Kumar Gogoi and Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Jorhat MLA Hitendra Nath Goswami.

Goswami said that the proposed decision to close the colleges was against public interest as it would deprive the upcoming generation from acquiring homeopathic medical education. He pointed out that Dr JK Saikia Homeopathic Medical College and Hospital, established in 1975, had total land area of 24 bighas.
