LAKHIMPUR: "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government have deceived and betrayed the people of the nation with false promises in the name of implementing many developmental schemes. One of the crystal clear examples of such false promises is the foundation stone of the Dissang Tekeliphuta Bridge over the Brahmaputra and no-initiative on the part of the BJP-led governments to start the construction work of the bridge," alleged Ripun Borah, the president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), in Lakhimpur on Saturday.

He said so while leading a massive protest programme initiated at the Dissang-Tekeliphuta Bridge foundation stone site by APCC in association with the Lakhimpur district Congress Committee (LDCC) and Dhakuakhana Block Congress Committee against the 'betrayal and lies' of the BJP government.

In this connection, a protest meeting was held at the spot under the chairmanship of LDCC president Dr. Joy Prakash Das. Addressing almost 300 protesters, the APCC president said that the Union Minister of Transport and National Highway Affairs, Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone of the Dissang-Tekeliphuta Bridge in 2016 just to ensure victory of MLA candidate Naba Kumar Doley, presenting a big lie to the Dhakuakhana people without having any technical preparation for the construction of the much-hyped bridge.

"But no single step was taken to start the construction of the bridge during the long period of five years despite the repeated promises of the Prime Minister," added the APCC president.

Attending the protest programme, former Union Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar also became vocal against the false promises of the existing BJP-led governments. Former minister Bharat Narah came down heavily on State P&RD Minister-cum-Dhakuakhana MLA Naba Kumar Doley alleging massive corruption in the department concerned and in Dhakuakhana constituency under his patronage. He said that Naba Kumar Doley was declaring that the strengthening work of Sissi-Tekeliphuta embankment and the two-lane project of Dhakuakhana-Gogamukh connecting road were his achievements.

"These projects were undertaken under the regime of the Congress-led government. They were completed in his term and so he has been trying to win people's admiration just by showing the projects as his achievements," Bharat Narah said.

Former MP Rani Narah also delivered speech in the protest programme. The Congress activists rocked the environment by shouting various slogans against the BJP government.
