Conservation of Ahom and Mughal era coins demanded

LAKHIMPUR: The researchers and conscious citizens of Lakhimpur have demanded the conservation of the silver coins of the Ahom and Mughal regime recovered in Dhakuakhana subdivision of Lakhimpur district on November 19.

These silver coins were recovered while one Samal Hundique, a resident of Bagicha Gaon under the subdivision, was digging one of his crop areas located to the south of the village namghar to fill his house foundation. While the labourers were digging the land, they suddenly noticed an earthen pitcher containing 14 coins. At first, the labourer could not identify the coins and then they showed the coins to a Muga farmer nearby. The Muga farmer later identified the coins to be of silver.

On November 21, researcher of historic coins, Nirupam Khanikar of Sivsagar arrived at the spot to study the coins. Some of the coins are identified of the Ahom regime while some others are identified to be of the Mughal empire. The name of Ahom king Rudra Singha, queen Sarbeswari, who was the third wife of King Shiva Singha, and other Ahom kings like Rajeswar Singha, Laksmi Singha and Gaurinath Singha were engraved on the silver coins of the Ahom regime.

Though 14 coins were recovered at first, some persons handed over 33 more such coins to the Dhakuakhana subdivisional administration on Friday. Meanwhile, two archaeological experts from the Directorate of Archaeology, Guwahati visited Dhakuakhana in order to study the coins for conservation.
