GUWAHATI: The Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday has informed that the construction work of the bridge which connects Jorhat and Majuli will start from November this year.

While speaking to reporters in Jorhat, CM Sarma said that the contractor have already submitted the design before the central government and when it will be approved the work will start from November this year.

He has informed that it will take around 4 years to complete the construction and for which a cabinet committee would be formed to inspect the work during construction period.

Earlier on February 09 this year, The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has sanctioned for construction of a major bridge over river Brahmaputra to connect the world's largest inhabited river island Majuli in Assam amounting to Rs 925 crore. The work has been awarded to M/s UP State Bridge Corporation Ltd. The length of the bridge will be 8 km. The project is estimated to be completed within four years. The agreement was signed on Monday by MoRTH CE (Zone V) UC Katara and UP State Bridge Construction Corporation Joint MD Ashish Srivastava in the presence of MoRTH ADG SK Nirmal.

"The project is being taken up to fulfil the long-awaited demand of the local public," said MoRTH.

The bridge will provide connectivity between Jorhat and Kamalabari ghat of Majuli. As of now, people living in these areas rely on river ferries for transportation. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal welcomed the initiative of the Central government. "The construction of one of the most important bridges over the Brahmaputra connecting Jorhat to the sacred river island Majuli is a great infra project for New India," said Chief Minister Sonowal.
