Construction workers stage massive protest in Lakhimpur district

LAKHIMPUR: Expressing vehement resentment against the alleged lackadaisical attitude on the part of the government towards resolving the long-pending issues of the construction workers, the Lakhimpur district unit of All Assam Construction Workers' Union stage massive protest in North Lakhimpur town on Monday. By staging the protest, the organization flayed the government for not implementing the 16 facilities for the construction workers although they had been declared.

In this connection, the organization took out a protest rally in North Lakhimpur town from the Lakhimpur district unit office of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Making a round in the town, the protesters arrived at the office of the District Labour Officer and demonstrated dharna there. Several labour organizations along with the Lakhimpur District Congress Committee extended support to the protest programme wherein president Girindra Prashad Upadhyay, secretary Satyaranjan Das, CPI Lakhimpur unit secretary Arup Kalita were among those who were present.

Later, the organization submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of the Construction Worker Welfare Council under the Government of Assam through the District Labour Officer. Through the memorandum, the organization demanded to save the Construction Worker Welfare Council, to take steps to register all the construction workers of the State in a stipulated period, to grant Rs. 7,500 per month for a period of six months to the construction workers as lockdown compensation along with six other demands.
