DIBRUGARH: Save the Children, Bal Raksha, Bharat along with Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) had organized a consultation to address the child rights in the tea industries of Assam. The consultation was organised to bring a cohesive collaboration with ACMS to build the momentum and address the issues related to child rights and child protection in the tea gardens of Assam.

Assam ranks low on key women and child related indicators as compared to the national data. As per NFHS 5, 31.8% of the women in the age group of 20-24 years are married before the age of 18 years.

Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in the state continue to be higher than the national level over the past decade especially for the tea growing districts.

The said consultation with Trade Union in tea industry on Child Rights is aimed to draw a road map for a strategic direction for addressing the issues related to child labour, child marriage, child trafficking and sexual exploitation of children, both boys and girls, especially in the tea gardens in Assam; thereby strengthening the child protection mechanisms.

The consultation was graced by president of Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Paban Singh Ghatowar as a guest of honour.
