Consumption of liquor claims four lives in Merapani

MERAPANI: Four people died while eight have been hospitalized in various places of Merapani due to consumption of spurious liquor till the filing of this report.

The victims include Babul Dutta (38), Durna Kalita (48) of Govindpur village, Kamal Gogoi (40) of Pulibagan, Lalit Gogoi (30) and Papu Bora (30) of Adarsha village under Merapani police station. Death of 13 people had been reported at Oka Garanga under Ghiladhari police station and many are undergoing treatment in the hospital. The number of deaths if likely to go up.

The conscious section of people and various organizations like Mod Mukta Bahini Asom, Merapani unit, have blamed the police and excise department for the tragedy and have demanded that all illegal liquor dens should be closed down.
