PATHSALA: The Assam Sahitya Sabha has been embroiled in controversy during its ongoing 77th session, which began on January 31. Known for conferring various honors, the session has raised a multitude of questions about the integrity of its award distribution process.
The recipients included author Chandana Pathak, who was given the Nakul Chandra Sahitya Award. Instead of celebrating her win, however, Pathak expressed dismay at having been awarded the prize, saying that she had not filed or applied for the award. She also criticized the selection process, saying that the book for which she received the award, "Panthashala," is not a children's novel, as suggested.
In social media, Pathak brought up many questions regarding how her book received an award in children's literature without her being aware of it. She lamented the fact that the critics do not have patience to read and understand the works before coming out with judgments. In her words, she further pointed out that many talented children's authors in Assam had been overlooked in this entire process, raising doubts about the criteria used for nomination.
There was further confusion regarding the book timeline. "Panthashala," published by Purvayan Publications in 2022, was mistakenly recognized as a manuscript from 2025, which further confused the legitimacy of the award.
In conclusion, Pathak stated that instead of feeling honored, the award insulted her and put her through emotional agony. "For any writer, the real prize is in the love bestowed upon by the readers, not in the awards," she said.
