Convergence-cum-Awareness meeting against child marriage held in Tezpur

Tezpur: A convergence-cum-awareness meeting was held on Sunday at the DC’s conference hall, Tezpur on the theme ‘Stopping Child Marriages’ (ANGIKAAR). The meeting was chaired by DDC, Farouk Alaom in presence of Diganta Baishya, CEO, Zila Parishad, Dr. Krishna Kemprai, Joint Director Health, Sonitpur, and officials of the health department, Child Protection Officer and Inspector of Schools. The objective of the meeting was explained by Anjusree Phukan, DME, NHM, Sonitpur.

Addressing the meeting, Farouk Alaom said that child marriage was a social concern and violation of children’s rights, whether it happened to a boy or girl, as it denied the basic right to health, nutrition, education, freedom from violence, abuse and exploitation and deprived the child of childhood. The impact was more on the lives of the girls and was more serious than that of boys. As far as girls were concerned, child marriage was one of the basic human right violations which paved the way for many other social evils against them.

Advocate Shahida Begum said that those marrying early may be more susceptible to domestic violence and poor mental health. Dr. Rupak Borah, SDM&HO, Jamuguri and Dr. D Adhikari, SDM&HO, Rangapara delivered a speech on physical problems for early marriage. Group discussion was also held with all the line listing departments and Joint DHS asked to prepare a plan of action for stopping child marriage.
