UDALGURI: The Coordination Committee of Tribal Organizations of Assam has opposed the Union governments move to provide ST status to other six communities of Assam. The leaders stated that there are one and half crore people of the six communities in Assam while the existing tribals of 14 communities are only 50 lacs. Viewing their votes the Union government moved the bill in parliament, the tribal leaders said.

Gobinda Basumatary, the general secretary of NDFB(P), Dipen Boro, the ABSU vice president, Ananta Rabha, the social worker and other leaders gathered at Sapkhaity Chowk and burnt the Constitution Amendment Bill for ST status to six communities of Assam in a Maghi Meji and shouted slogans like ‘stop ST status to advanced communities’, ‘we want justice’ etc. The tribal people fear that their rights and privileges as ST would be outnumbered by those proposed communities’ populace.
