DIBRUGARH: Resentment has been brewing against the Amolapatty Kabarsthan Committee following its refusal to allow burial of the body of a 4-year-old COVID positive boy in the burial ground on August 6 despite the district administration and police's permission. Mandatory PPE kits were given to the family members to wear during the janaza at the Kabarsthan.

However, the relatives and others brought back the body of Iman Hussain, son of Rajib Hussain, from the Kabarsthan with a heavy heart to his house at Kalibari because of the committee's office bearers plea that janaza of COVID patient could not be performed at night. The statement of the office bearers irked the family members of the deceased and other people but they demanded immediate dissolution of the existing Kabarsthan management committee.

The janaza of Iman Hussain was performed at the same Kabarsthan on August 7 under strict COVID-19 protocol in presence of officials of the administration as well as police. The irate people of the locality, while condemning the office bearers, alleged that Amolapatty burial ground was not a private property of any individual or a group of people. "The present Kabarsthan committee, ignoring the wish of the members of 14 jamats attached with this burial ground, have been functioning as office bearers from the last 14 to 15 years without submitting any account statement of the Kabarsthan to the public," said a number of conscious people of the jamats. They also cited recent court cases to this effect.

When contacted, the secretary of the Kabarsthan Committee, Javed Hussain stated that as the family members as well as some well-wishers of deceased approached them for janaza at about 9 PM on August 6, they felt that it was not judicious to allow a COVID patient's janaza at night. "Later, our president, Tarique Ahmed discussed the matter with the district administration officials and Superintendent of Police, and apprised them the ground situation for our refusal to give permission in the night. The janaza was performed at the assigned site earmarked for COVID patients on August 7 maintaining COVID protocol strictly," he said.
