COVID-19 patient kills self in GNB Civil Hospital at Tinsukia

TINSUKIA: A COVID patient named Karimul Hussain (74) admitted in GNB Civil Hospital at Tinsukia on August 9 allegedly committed suicide by banging his head against an iron grill inside the COVID unit in the early morning hours of Saturday. The hospital authority maintained a close guarded secret even after 36 hours of incident to the extent of declining the identity of the person.

According to sources, the patient was a resident of Balugadha Napali Mandir under Ward no 7 (Parbotia) of Tinsukia Municipality.

"The deceased was mentally unstable and he left his bed while others were asleep and was noticed moving towards the toilet. Suddenly he took a bizarre move and started crashing his head against the veranda grill following which his was stuck inside the grill. Though the health personnel on duty along with co-patients pulled out the person but he was declared dead," said the source.

The deceased person was initially admitted at Rangajan COVID Care Centre near Doomdooma on August 7 and later shifted at GNB Civil Hospital. The health department is yet to make any formal declaration on the circumstances that led to his death.
