Crackdown against child marriages across Assam

MANGALDAI: As a part of the massive operation launched against child marriage by Assam Police, Darrang Police have till date arrested 42 accused persons, which included 21 guardians.
Informing media persons, Darrang Superintendent of Police Prasanta Saikia said that all the accused have been arrested in connection with 105 cases registered in the district under the relevant section of POCSO Act and Child Marriage Prohibition Act. All the arrested accused persons have been produced before the judicial court on Friday and were remanded to the judicial custody in Mangaldai District Jail. "The priests and kazis and other persons involved in the child marriage will also be arrested in due course," firmly added Superintendent of Police Prasanta Saikia.
BISWANATH CHARIALI: A total of 139 people were arrested in Biswanath police district in connection with child marriage. Biswanath Superintendent of Police Nabin Singh said in a press conference here that police officers in charge of Chatia, Biswanath, Jinjia, Bihali, Halem and Gahpur police stations under Biswanath police district raided their respective areas on Thursday night. Based on a total of 97 cases in the Biswanath police district, the police managed to arrest 23 people at Chatia police station, 24 at Biswanath Chariali police station, 20 in Jinjia police station, 30 in Behali police station, nine in Halem police station and 33 in Gahpur police station. Two of the arrested persons were kazis, the police officer said.
DHUBRI: Altogether 136 persons were arrested in child marriage cases against 370 cases registered in different police stations of Dhubri district on Friday. Dhubri district has the highest number child marriage cases in Assam. Dhubri Superintendent of Police, Aparna Natarajan said that arrests would continue and all the persons who had married girls below 18 years of age in Dhubri district would be booked.
KOKRAJHAR: As many as 96 people have been arrested in connection with child marriage cases the in Kokrajhar district under various police stations. Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police P. Singh said altogether 96 people had been arrested in the district on the first day of crackdown against child marriage from various locations. He said there were 204 child marriage cases in the Kokrajhar district of which 96 people have been arrested for involvement in child marriage. The arrested persons are in different police stations of Kokrajhar district, he said, adding that some of the accused are fleeing to evade arrest.
Tezpur: Sonitpur Police on Friday apprehended as many as 31 persons, including few guardians, who were involved in child marriage, said Additional SP Madhurima Das. She added that 31 persons were apprehended in Sonitpur district - 17 people at Tezpur, 4 at Missamari, 1 at Thelmara, 3 at Dhekiajuli, 1 at Rangapara, 2 at Chariduar and 3 at Jamuguri. Those having married girls below 14 years of age will be booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and cases under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 will be registered against those who have married girls in the 14-18 years age group. She appealed to the people to extend support and cooperation to "rid the Sonitpur district of the evil practice".
