Create Awareness About Perils of Not Following Traffic Rules: Narsing Pawar

Tezpur: The 30th National Road Safety Week programme, organized under the aegis of Sonitpur district administration, transport and police department and with the active support of Sonitpur Zila Be-Sarkari Paribohan Santha, Tezpur under the theme 'Sadak Suraksha-Jeevan Raksha', got underway at the Secretary RTA and DTO premises on Monday.

The programme was inaugurated by Narsing Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Sonitpur, in the presence of ADC Kulen Sarmah, District Transport Officer Makhan Dutta, Additional SP (Security), Olindita Gogoi, and Amit Kumar Nath, secretary of Zila Be-Sarkari Paribahab Santha.

During the course of the week, various activities including processions, car rallies, street plays, eye check-up camps and drivers' training camps will be held to bring awareness on the issue of road safety. The main target of the campaign will be the youth and students. During the programme, DC Narsing Pawar said that main reason for road accidents was behavioural, that is, a habitual flouting of traffic rules like not wearing helmet, not wearing seat belt, jumping traffic lights, over speeding and drunken driving. Hence, people should be made aware of the perils of not following traffic rules, and the emotional and financial trauma that it could bring to their families.

The DC appealed to the public to follow the traffic rules which would help in saving human lives in large numbers. According to statistics, in India nearly 1.5 lakh people lose their lives annually due to road accidents. It is estimated that around 400 people die every day in road accidents in India, bringing tremendous pain and financial burden as well as emotional trauma to the family and friends.
