KOKRAJHAR: As the State assembly election is due next year, the All Koch Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) has mounted pressure on the BJP-led government at the Centre and State to create separate state of Kamatapur before the assembly election, 2021.

The AKRSU has resolved to reiterate its demand for creation of Kamatapur state as well as granting ST status to the Rajbongshi community. On Friday, the AKRSU, Bhotgaon Anchalik Committee felicitated the meritorious students of the community who passed the HSLC exam, 2020 in first division. The leaders of the AKRSU urged the government to take measures for fulfilling their demands.

"Create separate Kama-tapur ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections in the State or face strong protest in the ensuing assembly elections," the AKRSU warned the Assam Government. The adviser of the AKRSU, Hiteswar Barman on Friday flayed the BJP-led State and Central governments for failing to take appropriate measure to accord Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Koch Rajbongshi community and creation of Kamatapur state. He said the BJP had promised to fulfil their demands if it came to power but after coming to power, the party had forgotten its commitment. He said the BJP promised to create Kamatapur state and include Rajbongshis in the ST list ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election and 2016 assembly election in Assam but the party was yet to fulfil these demands. Barman warned that the Rajbongshis would give the BJP a befitting reply in the 2021 assembly election and they would adopt an 'anti-BJP stand' as the saffron party had totally failed to accord ST status and create Kamatapur state.

AKRSU president Karmeswar Ray and secretary Jibesh Ray were prominent guests on the occasion. Meanwhile, the oath-taking ceremony of Bhotgaon Anchalik committee AKRSU was held on Friday. The new 42-member committee with Prithiraj Barman as president and Amit Ray as general secretary was formed and the members were administered oath on the occasion.
