Crimes and Criminals Won't Exist in Assam, Says Chief Minister Sarma

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that crime and criminals will not exist in Assam and also added that the state police have taken stringent steps against these two.

During a media interaction, commenting on the death of Niraj Das, the prime accused of the November 29 Jorhat lynching case, the Chief Minister also said that he died while trying to flee from police custody.

"He tried to flee from police custody. Three police personnel were also injured in the incident. I want to make it clear that the Assam police take a strict stance against crimes and criminals," he added.

The Chief Minister also criticized the Opposition Congress, which raised a demand for an inquiry into the incident.

"Assamese people abdicate the Congress for their anti-Assamese stand. Their MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha extended support to Pradip Datta Roy. Such is the stand of the Congress," he said, adding that his government would constitute a committee to inquire into the matter.

He also mocked the Congress that the committee would be constituted taking members from the Grand Old Party.
