SIVASAGAR: Noted cultural activist Ratul Phukan, a senior citizen of Old Amolapatty near Bakulbari LP School in Sivasagar town, breathed his last on Thursday morning in Guwahati due to old-age ailments. He was 89.
Phukan, who was a retired official of the Agriculture department, was closely associated with various socio-cultural organizations of Sivasagar. He was the vice-president of Sibsagar Natya Samaj, an active member of Seuj Konwar Parag Chaliha Smriti Rakshya Samiti, Chau-lung Syukafa Indoor Stadium Management Committee, Sanatan Dharma Namghar, Barwari Puja Samiti and Bakulbari LP School Management Committee.
He is survived by three daughters, two son-in-laws, grandchildren, one brother and a host of relatives and friends. His wife also passed away in April this year.
Dipali Chaliha, president of Sibsagar Natya Samaj, expressed deep condolence at the demise of Phukan who contributed immensely to the cultural arena of Sivasagar. His absence will be an irreplaceable loss for the Sibsagar Natya Samaj, said Chaliha. Saurav Chaliha, general secretary, Chau-Lung Syukapha Indoor Stadium Management Committee, also mourned the demise of Phukan.
