Darrang College celebrates 81st Foundation Day, Alumni Association turns 31

TEZPUR: The prestigious Darrang College of Tezpur, one of the oldest and most respected higher educational institutions of north Assam, celebrated its 81st Foundation Day and the 31st Foundation Day of its Alumni Association with great enthusiasm and reverence on Saturday.

Founded on July 26, 1945, through the tireless efforts of several visionary educationists and philanthropists, Darrang College has completed more than eight decades of academic excellence and continues to inspire generations of learners.

A festive atmosphere prevailed on the college campus on Saturday as the celebrations began at 9:30 a.m. with the Principal, Dr. Palashmoni Saikia, hoisting the college flag. This was followed by the hoisting of the Alumni Association flag by its President and retired administrative officer Dhrubajyoti Das at 9:45 a.m.

At 10 a.m., the tribute ceremony to the departed academic stalwarts of the institution was formally inaugurated by renowned archaeologist and former vice principal, Dr. Satish Chandra Bhattacharya. The main commemorative meeting commenced with a ceremonial lamp-lighting by the president of the Governing Body and retired professor, Dr. Khageswar Barakakati.

The Principal, Dr. Palashmoni Saikia, delivered the welcome address, and the event began with the Darrang College anthem, sung by both present and former students.

Distinguished personalities who graced the occasion included retired professor and alumnus Mahendra Nath Keot, founding General Secretary of the Alumni Association and former Principal Dr. Abani Kumar Sharma, advisors Ashwini Sharma and Nripendra Kumar Bora, and retired faculty members Dr. Bhubaneshwar Saharia, Minu Devi, Jiten Goswami, Dr. Khirendra Haloi, Dr. Purnananda Pawi, Dr. Kangkan Deka, and Dr. Gahan Chandra Mahanta.

On the occasion, the student union’s journal “Darrangian” was released by Dr. Bhattacharya, and the college “Newsletter” was launched by noted science writer and retired professor, Dr. Ramesh Chandra Goswami.

Tezpur MLA and Darrang College alumnus Prithiraj Rava, attending as a special guest, expressed pride in being a part of the institution’s glorious journey. He praised the college’s recent achievement of Autonomous Status from the University Grants Commission, noting that Darrang College is no longer just a key institution in north Assam but now ranks among the top higher educational institutes in the entire state.
