MANGALDAI: Darrang district, too, for the first time got included in the list of cocoa plantation as Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah on Tuesday planted two saplings of cocoa tree in his official residence in a symbolic way and experimental basis only to encourage and inspire the interested farmers of the district to take up cocoa plantation as a means of livelihood.

The Cocoa tree or TheobromaCacoa, originally with its wide distribution in South Eastern Mexico to Amazon basin, for the first time in Assam has been planted on individual level by ideal and progressive agri-preneurChenaishreeBasumatary of Rongjuli in Goalpara district. Few days back, during his visit to Mangaldai, ChenaishreeBasumatary gifted two cocoa saplings to a media person who requested the Deputy Commissioner to plant it in his official residence. Media person Bhargab Kumar Das also accompanied the Deputy Commissioner in planting the cocoa saplings.

"The cocoa plantation has a high commercial value as ideal farmer ChenaishreeBasumatary has reportedly achieved success with cocoa farming. I have already talked to the officials of KrishiVigyan Kendra, Darrang and District Agriculture Department to explore the possibility and scope of commercial cultivation of the cocoa in Darrang district. If the soil of the district is found to be feasible for cocoa plantation, we will create awareness among the farmers and interested youth for taking up cocoa plantation on commercial basis," said Darrang Deputy Commissioner DilipKumat Borah while talking to The Sentinel on Tuesday morning at his official residence.
