MANGALDAI: In a bid to ensure free and fair Assembly polls in the district, Darrang Deputy Commissioner Dilip Kumar Borah has taken a number of measures in his capacity as the District Election Officer (DEO).

Talking to The Sentinel on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner Borah said that 'Flying Squads' have been formed to check unethical activities in the run-up to the Assembly polls. He has appealed to the public and concerned citizens to immediately report any suspicious activities related to the election process to the 24-hour Complaint Monitoring Cell through its toll-free phone numbers 03612-724292/03713-1950/1800-345-3506.

The Deputy Commissioner further stated that as per Section 171 B of Indian Penal Code (IPC), any person giving or accepting any gratification in cash or in kind during the election process, with the aim of influencing the voting choice of the voter will be liable for imprisonment up to one year or a fine or both. Borah further added that as per Section 171 C of IPC, any person who threatens any candidate or elector, or any other person, with injury of any kind, too will face the above-mentioned punishments.
